How many of you have one? and how do you go about your life day to day? How do you deal? Or do you know someone. |

For me I literally cannot hold numbers in my head at all. For me when you say the number 2, I visualize the word written out. That is the only way I can remember it. I don't get a visual of the symbol. I had a lot of difficulty in school, but I learned several coping mechanisms to get by.
Now in life when confronted with numbers, I have several things that help me remember them. Addresses, I think of the numbers as animals and just remember the sequence. For example: 2551 for me that is cobra, kangaroo, kangaroo, snake. I don't know why it works, it just does. For phone numbers, I just memorize the sequence in which you'd touch them on the phone, not the number, but the location of the buttons on the phone.
When I was finally tested for a disability when I was in junior college, I had already had coping mechanisms in place. I was able to apply for extra time on any test that pertained to math or numbers.
Did you have a question about something in particular about learning disabilities? I deal with them a lot in my job as well. I did a huge project on learning disabilities in my masters program. Feel free to ask me anything, I'll tell ya if I might happen to know anything.

The Autism Spectrum covers a vast array of learning disabilities and include Asperger's Syndrome. There is also Dyslexia (inability to perceive words) and Dyscalculia (a numbers disability). There is ample research available on the net. ADD and ODD are mostly behavioral disabilities but can severely hamper a person's ability to learn - especially if misdiagnosed or untreated. ADD is too often confused with Asperger's.
A physical disability does not cause a learning disability and that's why learning disabilities are in a seperate category. |
