| | Subject: Working with a disability | Posted: February 8, 2008 @ 2:24 PM | | Hey ladies! I would have posted this in the General chat but I wanted opinions mainly from those who really understand. As I've stated on here before, I have lymphedema and with that condition it makes it extremely hard to be on my feet for long periods of time... thus resulting in limited availability as far as job choices is concerned. I have attempted to do jobs where I'm on my feet the entire time but it's a real struggle and extremely painful, plus I can't walk the next day too. So with all that said... I'm wondering what can I do? I'm in the process of looking for another job, I was doing telemarketing but I couldn't make their "quota" and unfortunately they let me go. But I feel like I need to find something and finding a job is so darn difficult especially as much descimination as I've gone through with all the job hunting I've done thus far. One grocery store owner told me right to my face that "Carmen, with your weight... I think it's best that I let you go, sorry" I swear that was her exact words... I just wish life wasn't so hard sometimes.

| | | | | | Subject: Working with a disability | Posted: February 8, 2008 @ 6:26 PM | | | OH MY GOD!! i can't believe she would stoop so low as to say something like that. SHE WILL DEFINITELY REAP THAT! girl, she done pissed me off. people can be such jack asses. well, u know i have lupus and i can't work either so i'm applying for disability and/or social security. have u tried that? and i was also going to suggest and admin /or call center position where u are sitting most of the time. they also have work at home positions if you have a computer, dsl, headset and home phone with anyone but Vonage. you can go online to www.workathomeagent.com and www.alpineaccess.com. i've worked for both and there's no start up cost, training is provided and you work on your own time with payment every two weeks like a regular job. well, check them out and let me know what happens. good luck. |
| | | | | | Subject: Working with a disability | Posted: February 8, 2008 @ 8:00 PM | | | Thank you for the feedback ladies. I've been doing alot of searching for call center and admin. jobs, nothing has turned up yet... but I'm not giving up and thank you soooooo much Sheera for the tip about those websites, I'm going to visit them now and I'll let you know how it goes. It's hard trying to find jobs like that, that aren't schemes or that don't require you to pay first. Thanks again ladies (((HUGS))) |
| | | | | | Subject: Working with a disability | Posted: February 8, 2008 @ 11:43 PM | | Hey sweetie, the other ladies gave you some great info. Do you attend church? If so, how about asking if they need any help in the church office? They are going to be MUCH more understanding about your condition, as well as provide you with a way to get experience with working in an office.
You can also try a temp agency, just be honest with your medical limitations.
Good luck honey! *hugs*

So I do know what you mean about not being able to walk the next day after a day of being on your feet. I see the pain that he is in so I can only imagine your pain.
what ever job you do find, find out about FMLA. that is the family, medical, leave act. that is if you have a medical condition that you may have to be absent because of dr. visits or illness or in your case pain, you will have some protection. On evaluations they cannot count those days against you. I have the form on file at my job because of my son, that I take to the doctor alot.
Your doctor will have to fill out the form and it is just an added protection for you because of your condition.
good luck on that job search. |
