| | Subject: My Medical Weight Loss | Posted: February 4, 2009 @ 12:57 PM | | Last year, I went in to the emergency room after coming home and finding my ankles, feet, and legs were extremely swollen and tingling while changing in to my p.j.s. The doctor's ran a bunch of tests but told me it was too much sodium intake even though on my blood work it read that my sodium levels were normal. I began seeing a nutritionist (for about the 90th time) and started to lose weight. After falling off of that diet (like every other) I began gaining weight again.
These past couple of months I have been experiencing the same swelling problems with no answers then obviously looking at my weight. After trying every diet in the book (no carbs, weight watchers, nutritionists, working out, hypnosis), I felt it was time that I do something bigger or I was going to die. I'm only 22 and I should not be having these problems. I talked with my family and let them know I wanted to get the Lap Band. I researched it and doctors and ran it through my insurance. The insurance said I could not get it unless i do a 6-month diet with a doctor.
So, I went to the doctor last week to begin this. I told her all of my problems , and especially about the swelling. She told me it could possibly be my heart so she ran an EKG and I got bloodwork and an ultrasound yesterday (results in 2 weeks). The EKG revealed that I have a heart murmur . And after checking my blood pressure, it was shockingly high. The doctor put me on the "medical diet" which has made me start the pill "Phentermine" which some of you may remember from the "Phen Phen Diet". The pill stimulates the hypothalmus in my brain to make me believe I am not hungry. So far, it is working, however the side effects are definitely happening. Since it is a controlled substance (amphetamine ) it makes me extremely jittery and I have cotton mouth. But since Friday I have lost about 7 lbs. I am eating healthier and started walking, but I really hope this goes on and I continue to learn to do this the right way because I'm afraid I will die.
I needed to get this out because I haven't had anyone to talk to other then my mom (who is skinny) and it's all bottling up inside. I'm very stressed out about this and constantly am thinking about my heart and wondering if something is going to happen with me just walking down the street or to my classes. If anyone has any advice, recipes, tips, or just any support would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading this.

| | | | | | Subject: My Medical Weight Loss | Posted: February 4, 2009 @ 3:55 PM | | Hi Sara
(And to all the other CC's, I have not been on an a long while...)
I recently lost about 30 lbs (From 260 to 230) and AFTER, found out that I might have high blood pressure.
I went to the dentist the Thursday before last for a Cleaning and a extraction. I do have some axiety, but my Dentist, who is really adimit about not working on patients with high Blood pressure readings, said he will not touch me ( You can die in the chair from a stroke during a procedure...). The Reading was 138/107 and he said I need to go and see my doctor. I called the Dr's office and made an emergency appointment for the following monday and he was dumbfounded. During my previous visits, my blood pressure hadnt been nearly as high. His Ultrasound Tech who is only there twice a month, happened to be there, so they did a EKG on my heart (I feel you on waithing for those results, I will found out mine next Monday) and he put me on the DASH Diet. I have to also walk at least 35 min 5 Days a week. No pills yet, he is monitering me, because I was doing a good job loosing the weight by myself. (I was down to 225 at my appointment) I am now 223 ish (5lb radis...the monthly gift is about to arrive...lol!)
Like you, I am also scared to death of something being wrong with my heart. But at the gym, I keep pushing myself when I walk. I am now incoraperating joging intermediatly between walking, and sometimes I feel like my heart is gonna leap out of my throat....but it keeps getting better and better.
If you ever need someone to lean on, Im your girl.
Take care and Pray hard!
Its the only way I am getting through this!

| | | | | | Subject: My Medical Weight Loss | Posted: February 11, 2009 @ 1:08 PM | | Hey Jigi! Thanks for be concerned! (Hugz)
Ok, I went to the Dr on Monday, and he said that my Ecko-Cardiogram came back clear, no damage to my heart!
My Pressure dropped from 138/107 to 136/88 which is a good drop, but he still wants that bottom number to be under 80. So I have to keep up with the Cardio up Im up to 4 days...tring to get to 5! lol! Its hard to make time and energy)
and I will se him in 3 weeks for anoher follow up.
No Meds so far...i am determined to get it right on my own!
I hope to see a post from Sara soon, I hope she is doing good...
