| | Subject: After-workout eating | Posted: November 3, 2008 @ 9:15 AM | | I've been a gym-rat for two years now, and I've gone through every possible scenario when it comes to eating after a workout. My goal in eating post-workout is two-fold: satifsy the hunger that I've worked up in teh gym, and prevent getting hungry enough to snack too early before lunch. I've eaten things that left me ravenous five minutes after finishing, and I've eaten things that helped me get to about 10am before my stomach started rumbling.
Do you have an eating plan that helps with preventing the munchies?
I know that recovery nutrition is important in terms of helping my muscles bounce back and keeping my blood sugar from crashing, so I've tried different approaches with those goals in mind. I've tried mixing protein and carbs, doing either protein or carbs alone, smoothies, liquids, man-made foods and natural foods. I've had varying levels of success, but my most successful test happened today.
I did a typial 40 minute cardio workout on the elliptical, and then I did 20 minutes of strength training with a five minute jog on the treadmill and stretching. I went into the locker room at 6:40am and ate 2.5 oz of baked chicken breast - plain except for a dusting of paprika. It consisted of two very thin, small chicken breasts, and I ate one before I went in the shower and one after. It was a little dry going down but I chugged water with it as well.
I can say that I felt satisfied and did not experience any hunger pangs until 10am this morning, which is really good for me. On some days I will eat a half a soy cheese sandwich, and I'm ready to eat my keyboard by 8:30. So I might have found a good after-workout snack.
Any thoughts or ideas? I'd love to hear what others are doing to get through the post-workout eating period.
Thanks,
Anna |

I go for the energy bars for hunger if I feel the need.
Other than that, I do tend to drink protein shakes if necessary or juices. I take water with me to the gym when I do work out and as far as eating afterwards, it's usually something lite like a salad or a bowl of cereal. |

Boiled eggs work well for me too. |

Or
Chicken Of the Sea Pink Salmon (Half Pouch) mixed with 1.2 Boiled Egg and a splash of our fave seasoning.
The Nuts and cheese thing is a great idea too!
Good Luck with finding your Variety of Gym snacks!
